Sheepadoodle Haircuts I Recommend as a Professional Groomer
Sheepadoodles are some of the sweetest, silliest, and fluffiest dogs I work with. Their coats, however, can be a handful. I’ve learned just how quickly their coat can go from cuddly to chaotic. Without the right haircut and maintenance, they’re prone to matting, skin issues, and grooming stress.
I’ll walk you through the haircut styles I recommend for everyday comfort. I’ll also share the tools and brushing tips I suggest to keep your Sheepadoodle feeling great between visits.
Understanding the Sheepadoodle Coat
One of the first things I check when meeting a Sheepadoodle is the coat type. Some are tightly curled like a Poodle, others are soft and wavy, and plenty fall somewhere in the middle. No matter the texture, most Sheepadoodle coats don’t shed much. That doesn’t mean they’re low maintenance. Their coats trap dead hair, debris, and moisture, which can quickly lead to matting if left unmanaged.
Here’s where I tend to see the worst mats:
Behind the ears
Under the collar or harness
In the armpits
Along the inner thighs and back legs
Brushing regularly is the best way to prevent painful mats. I tell my clients that brushing two to three times a week is the minimum if they want to avoid a shave-down.
My Go-To Brushes for Sheepadoodles:
Slicker brush: I use this first to break up tangles and lift the coat.
Metal comb: Perfect for checking behind the ears, around the tail, and through the legs.
Dematting tool: For the occasional stubborn knot, this can make the difference between trimming and shaving.
I always recommend investing in quality tools. Cheap brushes can be uncomfortable for your dog and don’t hold up well with regular use.
Why I Focus on Comfort in Every Haircut
Sure, I love giving dogs a cute, stylish finish. But if the haircut doesn’t help them stay clean, comfortable, and easy to care for at home, it’s not doing its job.
Shorter, practical cuts help prevent matting in high-friction areas. They make daily brushing faster and easier. They also keep dogs cooler in hot weather and reduce grooming appointment time, which helps lower stress for your pup.
Happy dogs are healthy dogs. That all starts with a comfortable haircut.
The Haircuts I Recommend Most for Sheepadoodles

Sheepadoodle Teddy Bear Cut
This is a fan favorite because it keeps the coat fluffy while staying manageable. I trim the body to about 1 to 2 inches, then round out the face and legs for that signature teddy look.
"It’s cute but still practical. Perfect for dogs with wavy or fleece coats."

Sheepadoodle Puppy Cut (All-Over Haircut)
Simple and effective. This is an even trim, usually 1/2 to 3/4 inch, across the entire body.
"It’s low-maintenance and works on just about any coat type. Great for active dogs or those who don’t love brushing."

Sheepadoodle Lamb Leg Cut
This one keeps the body short while leaving the legs a little fuller and rounder. It adds a touch of style without the daily upkeep of a show cut.
"It balances flair and function, especially for curly-coated dogs."

Sheepadoodle Summer Cut
When a coat is starting to mat or the weather is scorching, this short cut is my go-to. I take most of the coat down to about 1/4 inch. I sometimes leave the ears or tail a bit longer to keep some softness.
"Dogs feel great afterward, and it gives their skin a fresh start. Excellent for active pups or hot, humid climates."

Sheepadoodle Matted Shave Down
If your Sheepadoodle’s coat is severely matted and brushing would be painful or unsafe, a full shave is often the most humane option. I use a short blade to safely remove the mats and get under the coat without causing discomfort.
"This isn’t a style anyone hopes for, but sometimes it’s necessary to reset the coat. It gives the skin a chance to breathe and allows us to start fresh with regular brushing and maintenance."

Sheepadoodle Mohawk Cut
This fun and edgy style keeps the body trimmed short, typically around 1/2 inch, while leaving a strip of longer hair down the center of the head, neck, and back. I shape the mohawk based on the dog’s coat texture and personality, keeping it neat and symmetrical.
It adds a playful, standout look without sacrificing comfort or manageability. The shorter body keeps your Sheepadoodle cool and easy to brush, while the mohawk brings all the personality.
What I Consider When Choosing a Cut
Every Sheepadoodle is different, so I always ask a few questions before deciding on a style:
Is your dog indoors most of the time or very active outdoors?
Do you brush regularly or not much at all?
What’s the coat texture—curly, wavy, or something in between?
Are we in the middle of summer or heading into winter?
I want every haircut to reflect your dog’s lifestyle and your ability to maintain it at home.
My Recommended Grooming Routine
To keep your Sheepadoodle comfortable between grooms, here’s the schedule I recommend:
Haircuts every 4 to 8 weeks depending on coat length and your brushing habits
Brushing 3 to 4 times a week using the tools I mentioned above
Bathing every 4 to 6 weeks with a gentle, moisturizing dog shampoo
Use a detangling spray before brushing to prevent tugging
Check ears, paw pads, and eyes weekly for buildup or irritation
Following this routine helps avoid mats and makes each grooming session faster and more pleasant for both of you.
Styles I Don’t Recommend for Most Pets
Unless you're up for daily brushing and frequent salon visits, I usually steer clients away from:
Long or layered scissor trims
Breed-standard Old English Sheepdog cuts
High-maintenance fashion styles like Asian Fusion or intricate sculpting
They might look great online, but they’re tough to maintain and can stress out your dog if not properly cared for.
Final Thoughts From the Grooming Table
Sheepadoodles are wonderful dogs, but their coats need the right care to keep them happy and healthy. As a groomer, my goal is to create styles that work for both the dog and the owner. I focus on clean, comfortable cuts your dog can thrive in without requiring a full-time brushing schedule.
If you’re unsure what’s right for your pup, I’d love to help. Every coat and every lifestyle is different, and together we can figure out what works best.
